Прилагательное общий эквивалентно английским common и general. Common означает 'относящийся или принадлежащий нескольким людям' (по меньшей мере двум): с общего согласия – by common consent, общее достояние – common property, общее дело – common cause, общий язык – common language. General имеет значение 'всеобщий, имеющий отношение ко всем представителям данной группы, класса, страны и т. д.': общее (всеобщее) благосостояние – general welfare, всеобщие выборы – general elections, всеобщая забастовка – general strike. Словосочетания common knowledge и general knowledge не являются взаимозаменяемыми: common knowledge обозначает сведения, являющиеся всеобщим достоянием, нечто общеизвестное; general knowledge имеет в виду разносторонние знания, не обязательно исчерпывающие.
